Active and Passive

The last classes were dedicated to the study of the passive voice.
How is the passive voice formed?

Verb To Be + Past participle of the main verb

Present
Active voice: They speak French in Belgium.
Passive voice: French is spoken in Belgium.
                            To be   + past part.

Past
Active voice: Someone broke the window last night.
Passive voice: The window was broken last night.

Present Perfect
Active voice: They have built a new church.
Passive voice: A new church has been built.

Future
Active voice: They will produce ten thousand cars next year.
Passive voice: Ten thousand cars will be produced next year.

Think about the use of the passive voice. When is it normally used? Why?

  1. Hi teacher Marta,

Yesss....I've been so glad for you keep the blog update. Well, I think the passive voice has been used when you tell about things than happen with passive agent was unknown. That's correct?

  2. The passive voice is normally used when the agent of the actioo is not relevant. It is the action itself that matters.
    * English is spoken in the USA. ( It is not relevant to say "by the people" because only people speak.)
    * A new bridge has been built in Brasilia. ( What is relevant is that we have a new bridge, not who built it. If the "doer" is important, you naturally use the active voice.)
    Got it?
